Testing Case | In Situ Variable-Temperature Testing of Fluid Inclusions

Fluid Inclusion Microthermometry

I. Experimental Equipment and Software:

• GoGo Instruments XY-Adjustable Heating/Cooling Stage CH600S-XY

 CCD Microscopy System

New Integrated Temperature Control and Visualization Software 【G6G6VIEW】

II. Experimental Objective:

This experiment aimed to perform precise in situ variable-temperature testing on fluid inclusions using the aforementioned equipment and software.

III. Sample Preparation:

1. Samples were prepared as double-polished thin sections approximately 20.2mm in length.

2. Based on detailed mineralogical and inclusion structural observations, representative fluid inclusions were selected for microthermometric analysis.

3. Following recommendations from preliminary petrophysical measurements, all samples were tested, with those meeting the criteria for temperature measurement selected for further analysis.

4. During testing, all samples were monitored or surface-inspected to prevent detachment from slides. Both sides of the samples were cleaned with a brush every 2 hours, followed by a rinse with anhydrous ethanol after 24 hours. Observations were recorded, and the cutter cover was secured.

IV. Temperature Measurement Process:

1. Homogenization Temperature Measurement:

 Initial heating at 20°C/min.

When daughter crystals or carbon dioxide bubbles began to disappear, the heating rate was reduced to 0.5°C/min.

The temperature at which daughter crystals dissolved was recorded as the daughter crystal melting temperature, and the temperature at which bubbles disappeared was recorded as the homogenization temperature.

2. Ice Melting Point Measurement:

After homogenization, the sample was cooled rapidly at 20°C/min to -100°C to ensure complete freezing of the inclusion.

Heating was then initiated at 10°C/min.

Upon observing initial ice melting signs, the heating rate was reduced to 0.1°C/min. The temperature at which complete melting occurred was recorded as the ice melting point of the inclusion.

V. Experimental Results:

GoGo Instruments XY-Adjustable Heating/Cooling Stage CH600S-XY

① GoGo Instruments XY-Adjustable Heating/Cooling Stage CH600S-XY : Employing a modular integrated design, the stage works in tandem with a temperature controller, refrigeration controller, circulating water system, and liquid nitrogen support to deliver precise temperature control across an ultra-broad range of -190°C to 500°C.

② Technical Advantages:

1. Achieves precision temperature control with ±0.1°C stability even in extreme temperature ranges.

2. Real-time monitoring and feedback effectively eliminate thermal drift effects.

3. X-axis displacement via a micrometer head allows easy sample repositioning during tests.

③ Applications: With its intelligent temperature control technology, this platform is suitable for experiments in materials science, mineralogy, biopharmaceuticals, and other research fields—such as freeze-drying tests and fluid inclusion analysis—particularly where high-precision measurements under complex thermal conditions are required.
